Yes. He was ASKED to perform. You don't just get to go up to the Recording Academy and tell them that you are performing. It is an honor to be asked to perform.

The only performers that night so far are 3 time grammy winners Black Eyed Peas, 6 time nominee Maxwell, grammy winner Sugarland and Nick Jonas and the Administration.

Last year, Mariah Carey performed, BB King with John Mayer etc.

Maybe they want to be viewed as a more grown up band.
